Bugweri County Member of Parliament, Hon. Wandera Sadala, has urged residents to make cleanliness a daily commitment, not a one-day campaign.

He made the call on Saturday while leading residents of Idudi Town Council in a cleaning exercise to mark National Cleaning Day. The exercise brought together residents, local leaders and security personnel who cleaned streets, markets and other public spaces.

Hon. Wandera said poor waste disposal and unhygienic surroundings increase the risk of disease outbreaks in busy trading centres.

“If we continue practising cleanliness, we shall be able to control some of the dangerous diseases such as cholera and Ebola. Keeping our surroundings clean is one of the important steps we can take to protect the health of our people,” he said.

He urged residents to maintain hygiene practices adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic and to extend the effort to homes, businesses and roadsides.

“Let cleaning become our daily routine. We should not wait for a National Cleaning Day to clean our streets and markets. Every one of us has a responsibility to keep our environment clean every day,” he said.

He also called on fellow leaders to lead by example, saying their participation inspires communities to take ownership of public health.

The MP commended all participants and urged residents to maintain the momentum beyond the organised exercise.
