THE MULTINATIONAL LAKE VICTORIA MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT (MLVMCT) PROJECT
The Multinational Lake Victoria Maritime Communications and Transport (MLVMCT) Project is an initiative of the East African Community through the Lake Victoria Basin Commission funded by the African Development Bank
The project will Establish a Maritime Communications system on Lakes Victoria, Kyoga & Albert, increase GSM signal coverage on the 3 lakes, build 9 SAR Centre’s & Women fish drying sheds, set up a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre-MRCC & Expand the Fisheries Training Institute.
The development objective of the project is to promote & enhance transportation & trade activities on Lake Victoria by improving the infrastructure for maritime transport. This includes enhancing Maritime Communication, Navigation Safety Aids & emergency Search & Rescue services.
The Project overseeing the development of the Lake Victoria Basin is building a Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Mwanza. The project will also see the establishment of Coordination Centers in Entebbe & Kisumu.
