FORT PORTAL, Uganda | September 29, 2026 — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has tasked cultural institutions with working closely with the central government to preserve indigenous languages and culture, saying both areas have not received sufficient attention.
He made the remarks on Tuesday during the coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the 13th Omukama of Tooro at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.
The President said cultural leaders have an important role in passing indigenous languages and traditions to younger generations, noting that their preservation cannot depend solely on the formal education system.
“I challenge the cultural institutions to cooperate with the central government to strengthen their languages. This cannot be taught in education institutions, but the cultural leaders can. This is one area that has been neglected,” Museveni said.
He said cultural institutions are well placed to mobilise communities and promote the use of indigenous languages in everyday life.
Beyond language preservation, he identified culture as another area requiring greater attention, citing the role of cultural institutions in promoting identity and organising cultural activities.
“The second area that has been neglected is culture. The Nabagereka of Buganda used to organise cultural galas in Buganda. But I asked them, do you know culture?” he said.
The remarks came during the formal installation of Nyabongo I as the 13th Omukama of Tooro.
The coronation brought together cultural leaders, government officials, religious leaders and members of the Tooro community for the installation of the new king.
