Uganda is seeking to harness the capital and expertise of its citizens living in the Republic of Korea to drive investment and technology transfer.
The call was made during a diaspora engagement at the 88 Hotel in Seoul on Friday, ahead of the Uganda-Korea Trade and Investment Meeting slated for 6th to 10th September 2026 in partnership with the Korea International Trade Association (KITA).
The meeting brought together Ugandans living in Korea and government officials to explore how the diaspora can contribute to investment, technology transfer and tourism.
Uganda’s Ambassador to Korea, resident in Tokyo, H.E. Tophace Kaahwa, described Ugandans in Korea as “grassroots ambassadors” with the ability to promote Uganda’s interests through business networks and professional expertise.
She urged them to move beyond remittances and invest in productive sectors such as agribusiness, tourism, mineral development, science and technology, and assured the community of the embassy’s continued support.
Delivering the keynote address, Second Deputy Prime Minister and head of delegation, Rt. Hon. Dr Crispus Kiyonga, said Uganda’s economic progress provides opportunities for Ugandans abroad to participate in national development.
He conveyed greetings from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and commended the diaspora for maintaining unity and patriotism. Dr Kiyonga said Uganda’s economy is currently valued at about USD 70 billion, with government targeting USD 500 billion by 2040, driven by investment in roads and regional infrastructure, including the planned extension of the railway from Nairobi to Kampala.
The Director for Diaspora Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Elly Kamahungye Muhindo said government is developing a comprehensive diaspora policy to improve coordination and access to services for Ugandans abroad. The policy has been consulted on in North America and Europe and is now extending to Asia.
Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Amb. Vincent Waiswa Bagiire, Amb. Henry Mayega urged Ugandans abroad to maintain unity and support the country’s industrialisation agenda.

Mayega also encouraged participation in the Uganda Diaspora Convention scheduled for 18th to 22nd December 2026, which will provide a platform for the diaspora to share ideas and experiences.
