Kampala: The Government is developing a policy that will require all schools across Uganda to participate in the National Cleaning Day exercise.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has tasked the Ministry of Education and Sports with ensuring that the proposed policy makes participation in the exercise mandatory for schools.
Nabbanja issued the directive on Friday during an inter-ministerial meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister to review preparations for the next National Cleaning Day exercise, scheduled for 29 September 2026 in Hoima City, Bunyoro Sub-region.
She said schools should be incorporated into the national cleanliness campaign to instil a culture of maintaining clean and healthy environments among learners.
The proposed policy is expected to provide a framework for schools to participate in cleaning activities alongside Government institutions, local authorities and communities.
National Cleaning Day initiative is part of Government’s broader efforts to promote public cleanliness, proper waste management and environmental responsibility.
The upcoming exercise in Hoima City will bring together Government ministries, departments and agencies, local authorities and communities to undertake cleaning activities and raise public awareness on the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, inter-ministerial meeting also reviewed preparations for the exercise and the responsibilities of different stakeholders in ensuring its successful implementation.
Involving schools is expected to extend the cleanliness campaign to learners and their communities, while encouraging good hygiene and environmental practices.
The Ministry of Education and Sports is now expected to work with relevant stakeholders to develop modalities for implementing the proposed policy.
