Government officials and development stakeholders have reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as Uganda moves closer to the 2030 global target.

The commitment was made during a high-level review meeting convened to assess the country’s progress in implementing the SDGs and identify practical measures required to accelerate implementation over the remaining years.

The meeting was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary responsible for Policy Coordination, Mr Julius Victor Nkeramihigo, while the discussions were chaired by the Commissioner for Monitoring and Evaluation (Central Government), Mr Timothy Lubanga.

The Head of the SDGs Secretariat, Dr Albert Byamugisha, together with other technical officers, also participated in the meeting.

Participants noted that Uganda has made significant progress in mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals into its national planning framework. The SDGs have been integrated into the National Development Plans, ensuring that national priorities are aligned with the global agenda for sustainable development.

The meeting further observed that the majority of the SDG targets have been incorporated into existing government programmes. This alignment was recognised as an important milestone in ensuring that sectoral interventions contribute directly to achieving the country’s long-term development aspirations while fulfilling international commitments under the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Despite the progress made, participants acknowledged that several areas require greater attention if Uganda is to achieve the SDGs within the remaining timeframe. Improving the quality of SDG data and strengthening reporting mechanisms emerged as one of the key priorities.

Accurate, timely and reliable data was identified as essential for measuring progress, informing policy decisions and ensuring accountability across all sectors.

Recognising the increasing demand for resources to finance development programmes, stakeholders called for the exploration of innovative financing mechanisms to complement traditional sources of funding.

Participants observed that mobilising sustainable financial resources will be critical in supporting the implementation of government programmes aimed at advancing social, economic and environmental development.

The review further highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration among government institutions, development partners, the private sector and other stakeholders. Participants agreed that achieving the SDGs requires coordinated action, shared responsibility and strong partnerships capable of mobilising expertise, innovation and investment.

As the 2030 deadline draws nearer, the meeting reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to sustaining progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals through improved planning, stronger monitoring systems, enhanced financing and greater collaboration.
