The 13th edition of the East African Community Armed Forces Field Training Exercise, codenamed ‘Ushirikiano Imara’, officially drew to a close at the Rwanda Defence Force Military Academy in Gako today.
The exercise, conducted under the theme “Strengthening the Security Sector Integration and Harnessing Common Interests Consistent with EAC Regional Peace and Security”, brought together participants from East African Community member states.
The Hon. Juvenal Marizamunda, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Rwanda, presided over the exercise’s closing ceremony and commended partner states and participants for demonstrating unity and dedication in addressing complex and multidimensional security challenges.
“Through collaboration and support as the EAC, can we address the 21st-Century security challenges which have proven to be exceptionally complex,” said Hon. Marizamunda. He urged member states, the EAC Secretariat, and participants to evaluate the exercise’s accomplishments and share their experiences.
The Secretary General of the East African Community, Hon. Veronica Mueni Nduva, observed that the exercise aimed to enhance partner states’ capabilities in defending the community’s shared interests.
Gen Mubarakh Muganga, Chief Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force, praised sister forces from member states for their commitment, stating that the exercise fostered a strong bond among participating states, laying a solid foundation for the community to develop homegrown solutions to local problems.
During his inspection of the Uganda contingent, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, lauded the contingent for demonstrating discipline and professionalism throughout the exercise. He also commended them for representing Uganda well and upholding the integrity of the UPDF.
The function was attended by officials and dignitaries from EAC member states.
