Nearly 100 plumbers and health workers from 50 health facilities across Uganda have completed a 10-day Rotary WASH Institute (RoWASHi) training at Nkumba University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme equipped them with practical skills in wastewater and drainage management, infection prevention, water safety, and healthcare water systems to improve WASH services in health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Nkumba University Vice Chancellor and project lead, Prof. Jude Lubega, said the training addresses the shortage of skilled technicians in health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany facilities lack trained technicians to maintain WASH systems. This programme equips participants with practical skills to address that gap and improve service delivery,<\/em>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged trainees to apply and share the knowledge, and thanked Rotary International, The Rotary Foundation, and partners for supporting the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Lubega noted that the 10-day training is the first stage of certification. Participants must complete five online modules and assessments before graduating on October 24. Trainers will also assess application of skills at health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rotary Club of Kajjansi President Mary Nagganda said the programme was introduced to address persistent WASH challenges in rural health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cImproving access to clean water and sanitation prevents disease. We expect participants to return and improve services in their communities,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beneficiaries said the training will improve healthcare delivery. WASH technician Muhereza Chresostome said it provided practical skills for better water and sanitation management, while Hasina Baryamujura noted improved understanding of water quality and wastewater systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 2025, the Rotary WASH Institute at Nkumba University promotes sustainable WASH solutions across Africa. The plumbers\u2019 training programme is coordinated by the Rotary Club of Kajjansi and supported by The Rotary Foundation and Rotary partners in Uganda and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
