(Rtd) Moses Ali<\/a>, many will remember the titles he held: soldier, Cabinet minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and legislator. But beyond those offices lies a deeper question: why has the death of the 87-year-old statesman touched so many Ugandans?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer lies in a public life that spanned more than five decades, helping to shape Uganda&#8217;s political journey, restoring peace in the West Nile sub-region, and championing development through public service and agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To many, Gen. Moses Ali was more than a government official; he was a bridge between Uganda&#8217;s turbulent past and its pursuit of stability, reconciliation, and national progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Parliament to the villages of Adjumani, messages of grief and remembrance have continued to pour in as leaders, colleagues, and ordinary citizens reflect on the life of a man who witnessed, influenced, and helped shape some of Uganda&#8217;s defining moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many remember the senior offices he held, others recall a leader who worked to restore hope in communities emerging from conflict, championed reconciliation in West Nile, and remained committed to public service throughout his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Gen. Moses Ali built one of the longest and most remarkable careers in Uganda&#8217;s public life. Trained as a lawyer before joining national leadership, he served in different capacities as a military officer, Cabinet minister, Member of Parliament for Adjumani West, and Deputy Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few leaders remained at the centre of Uganda&#8217;s political landscape for as long as he did, with his career spanning successive governments and some of the country&#8217;s most significant political transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gen. Moses Ali died at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 87 after a period of illness, bringing to an end a life dedicated to public service. His passing triggered an outpouring of tributes from across the country, with leaders describing him as a patriot, an elder statesman, and one of Uganda&#8217;s most enduring political figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand why Uganda remembers Gen. Moses Ali today, one must look beyond the offices he occupied and revisit the defining moments that shaped his legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those moments came during Uganda&#8217;s years of political instability when he emerged as a leading figure in the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF), a West Nile-based movement that became part of the country&#8217;s complex political and military history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although that period was marked by conflict, it also laid the foundation for a remarkable transformation that would later define his public life. Rather than remaining on the battlefield, Gen. Moses Ali became one of the leaders who embraced reconciliation and national rebuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That transformation became most evident after the National Resistance Movement assumed power in 1986. Through dialogue and reconciliation, Gen. Moses Ali played an important role in restoring peace in the West Nile sub-region, encouraging former combatants to reintegrate into national life and rebuilding trust between the region and the central government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The return of peace created conditions for improved security, public services, and economic recovery, making reconciliation one of the defining achievements of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His commitment to Uganda did not end with peace-building. For decades, Gen. Moses Ali served in successive governments, becoming one of the country&#8217;s longest-serving Cabinet ministers and senior political leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether representing Adjumani West in Parliament or serving as First, and later Second, Deputy Prime Minister, he was widely respected for his institutional memory, measured leadership, and ability to guide the government through changing political seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Away from politics, Gen. Moses Ali became a passionate advocate of commercial agriculture. At his farm in Adjumani, he demonstrated how modern farming could improve household incomes, create employment, and strengthen food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His success inspired many farmers in West Nile to embrace agriculture not simply as a livelihood but as a pathway to economic transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paying tribute to the fallen statesman, President Yoweri Museveni described Gen. Moses Ali as a leader who had served Uganda faithfully both as a soldier and as a political leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<em>Gen. Moses Ali has provided service to his country for a long time, as a soldier and a political leader,&#8221;<\/em> the President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the late leader had also set &#8220;the good example of being a big modern farmer&#8221; in West Nile and said Uganda would greatly miss his contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former minister Capt. Mike Mukula echoed those sentiments, describing Gen. Moses Ali as &#8220;<em>a distinguished patriot, freedom fighter and statesman<\/em>&#8221; whose contribution to peace, national unity, stability, and reconstruction &#8220;<em>will forever remain engraved in the history of our nation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;<\/em> He added that the veteran leader&#8217;s life demonstrated that &#8220;<em>true greatness is measured not by the offices one occupies, but by the lives one touches and the nation one helps to build.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History will remember Gen. Moses Ali as more than a soldier or politician. It will remember a man who experienced Uganda through war and peace, who chose reconciliation over prolonged conflict, who devoted decades to public service, and who inspired development through leadership and agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His story mirrors Uganda&#8217;s own journey from division to reconciliation, from uncertainty to rebuilding, and that is why Gen.
