He folds his blanket carefully in the corner of his small, rented room in Kikoni, splashes water on his face from a blue jerrycan, and checks his phone for the day’s first customer request. Outside, boda bodas are already roaring to life. Vendors are arranging tomatoes on wooden stalls. Taxi conductors are shouting destinations into the cold morning air. To the people rushing past him, Brian is just another boda rider trying to survive Kampala traffic. But three years ago, he wore a graduation gown at Makerere University.

His mother ululated loudly when his name was called. His uncle slaughtered a goat back home in the village. Neighbours shook his hand and called him “our engineer.” For one glorious afternoon, his family believed poverty had finally ended. Today, his engineering degree sits inside a brown envelope beneath his mattress. Sometimes he removes it at night and stares at it silently. Not because he regrets studying. But because life turned out differently from what everybody promised.

“I thought by now I would be working in an office,” he says softly, adjusting his helmet strap.

“Instead, I transport people who sometimes insult me for delaying in traffic.” Then he laughs painfully.“But what can I do? Hunger does not respect degrees.”

The Ugandan families were sold.

For decades, Ugandan families believed education was the surest bridge out of suffering. Parents sold land. Mothers spent years in markets under the scorching sun. Fathers borrowed money they could barely repay. Everything revolved around one dream:

“Our child will graduate and change the family.” In villages across Mbarara, Gulu, Mbale, and Arua, graduation ceremonies became emotional community victories.People contributed tuition money.Churches prayed for students.Relatives sacrificed school fees for younger siblings so one child could “make it.”And for years, the formula seemed simple:Study hard.Graduate.Get a job. Save the family. But somewhere along the way, Uganda changed faster than the dream itself.

The CV has become a daily uniform for many

After graduation comes silence. No calls. No interviews. No jobs. Only endless applications and photocopied CVs that slowly become worn out at the edges. For many graduates, unemployment begins quietly before becoming deeply personal. At first, relatives ask politely:

“So, any opportunities yet?” Months later, the questions take on a different tone: “You mean you studied all those years for nothing?” That is the part many people do not see. The emotional violence of unemployment. The shame of waking up at home every morning while younger siblings watch you helplessly. The embarrassment of avoiding old classmates. The pressure of pretending life is okay on WhatsApp statuses while your landlord is demanding rent.

Sandra, a business administration graduate, now sells handbags online on Instagram and TikTok from a tiny room in Kawempe. Every morning, she photographs shoes and handbags against a white curtain near her window because natural light makes the products look more expensive.

Online, people comment: “Boss lady!” “CEO!” “Big girl things!”

But behind the screen is another reality.

“There are days I have transport for delivery but no money for lunch,” she admits quietly. Her voice cracks slightly.

“My parents still think I’m close to getting an office job. I’ve never told them how hard things actually are.”

Uganda’s new graduates are learning to hustle

Across Uganda, degrees no longer guarantee office jobs. So young people are inventing survival. The journalism graduate is editing TikTok videos for musicians. The procurement officer is selling sneakers online. The teacher is making liquid soap. The IT graduate is repairing phones downtown. The agriculture student is now proudly farming onions and tomatoes.

The economy that many graduates prepared for no longer fully exists. And yet, something remarkable is happening in the middle of this struggle: young Ugandans are refusing to collapse.

The boda helmet and the hidden degree

For many educated youth, survival also comes with wounded pride. Brian says the hardest part was not riding a boda. It was being seen riding one.

The first time he carried a passenger near Wandegeya, he spotted a former classmate in another taxi. He immediately turned his face away.

“I felt ashamed,” he recalls.

“You study for four years, then people see you carrying passengers. You begin asking yourself whether education even mattered.” But later, reality humbled him. Rent needed money.

His younger sister needed school fees. His mother needed medicine. And slowly, the boda stopped becoming a symbol of failure. It became survival.

“The degree remains mine,” he says. “This boda is just how I feed people.”

That sentence alone captures the pain of an entire generation.

From White Collars to Gumboots.

Perhaps the greatest irony is that many graduates are now returning to agriculture, the very work society once taught them to escape. For years, children were warned: “Read hard so you don’t end up digging.”

But today, educated youth are farming with renewed seriousness. In parts of Mbarara and Masaka, graduates are building poultry farms, growing coffee, rearing pigs, and cultivating vegetables. Some are earning more than friends working office jobs in Kampala. Yet many still hesitate to post pictures in gumboots online. Because Uganda still glorifies ties more than productivity. A young graduate can proudly upload graduation photos but feels embarrassed uploading pictures of harvesting cabbages. That contradiction reveals how deeply society misunderstood success.

The quiet mental battles

Behind Uganda’s hustle culture is another story people rarely discuss openly. The mental exhaustion. The loneliness. The feeling of being left behind while others seem to succeed. Many graduates spend years battling silent disappointment. They attend introduction ceremonies, smiling in borrowed suits while privately worrying about unpaid rent. They congratulate successful friends while secretly questioning their own worth. Some stop attending family gatherings completely because the questions become unbearable. And social media makes everything worse. Online, everybody appears successful: New cars, Dubai photos, New jobs, Apartments, Fancy offices. Meanwhile, thousands of educated young Ugandans are surviving meal by meal.

But perhaps this generation is teaching Uganda something new.

Maybe the tragedy is not that graduates are hustling. Maybe the tragedy is that society still believes dignity only exists inside offices. Because there is dignity in honest struggle. There is dignity in a graduate selling chapati instead of stealing. There is dignity in farming instead of surrendering to hopelessness. There is dignity in content creation, online business, photography, delivery work, and small survival businesses. Uganda’s educated youth may not have found the economy they were promised. But many are building one with their own hands.

How do we survive this crisis?

The answers will not come overnight. But certain truths are becoming urgent. Uganda must stop shaming practical work. Universities must teach entrepreneurship and financial survival alongside theory. Government institutions and banks must support youth innovation with real funding, not speeches alone. Families must redefine success beyond office desks and neckties. And perhaps most importantly, young people themselves must stop believing that changing direction means failure. Sometimes survival itself is courage.

The Generation That Refused to Die Quietly

Late at night, long after the traffic jams fade from Kampala roads, thousands of educated Ugandans are still awake. Some are editing YouTube videos on cracked laptops. Some are packaging liquid soap orders. Some are calculating tomorrow’s tomato prices. Some are charging boda batteries for the next morning’s hustle. Some are livestreaming product demos on TikTok under dim hostel lights. Not because this was the future they imagined. But because somewhere between disappointment and survival, they discovered resilience.

A resilience stronger than embarrassment. Stronger than rejection letters. Stronger than society’s expectations. And perhaps one day, Uganda will finally understand that this generation was never lazy. It was simply forced to build life differently from the way it was promised. Because sometimes education does not lead to an office. Sometimes it teaches people how to rise after life breaks their expectations. And in today’s Uganda, that may be the most important lesson of all.

There is dignity in honest struggle, even without an office job By Christine Keehe There is dignity in honest struggle, despite failing to get an office job At exactly 6:40 am, before most offices in Kampala open, Brian is already awake.
