Following its recent assumption of power distribution duties, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is asking electricity users across Uganda for understanding and patience as it works to stabilize and improve services. This request was made during the 3rd Power and Electricity Forum held at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Hall in Lugogo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEDCL’s Executive Director, Paul Mwesigwa, explained that the company encountered a strained distribution network upon taking over operations earlier this year on April 1, 2024. According to Mwesigwa, the network was already under significant pressure because essential improvements were put on hold when the government concluded Umeme’s agreement in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mwesigwa stated that UEDCL initially concentrated on urgent repairs. He added that after a period of addressing immediate problems, they have now shifted to planned maintenance activities, which have been announced to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address shortcomings in the infrastructure, UEDCL has placed orders with new manufacturers for transformers and repair services. However, Mwesigwa recognized that delays in receiving supplies have slowed the pace of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company is also communicating with relevant parties and seeking financial assistance to ensure a seamless transition. Mwesigwa emphasized that thorough planning and cooperation are vital for overcoming initial obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eng. Peter Kakeeto from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) stressed the regulator’s role in monitoring the transition. He stated that licensing UEDCL involved not only a formal process but also the establishment of clear performance standards and funding needs to ensure uninterrupted service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kakeeto asked the public to be patient as UEDCL hires personnel and modernizes its systems. He also called for combined efforts to fight vandalism and electricity theft, which add further stress to the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite ongoing challenges, UEDCL is dedicated to providing dependable electricity services. The company encourages customers to stay informed through official communications as it strives to stabilize and enhance Uganda’s power distribution system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
