{"id":4244,"date":"2025-05-26T15:29:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T15:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/govinfohub.go.ug\/?p=4244"},"modified":"2025-05-26T15:35:32","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T15:35:32","slug":"uganda-govt-islamic-bank-agree-on-ugx-2-9tr-support-to-economic-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/govinfohub.go.ug\/index.php\/2025\/05\/26\/uganda-govt-islamic-bank-agree-on-ugx-2-9tr-support-to-economic-resilience\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda Gov&#8217;t, Islamic Bank Agree on UGX 2.9Tr Support to Economic Resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, has secured a $800 million (UGX 2.92 trillion) financing agreement from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to support economic resilience and sustainable human development from 2025 to 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Country Engagement Framework (CEF) was signed by Ramathan Ggoobi, Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, and Rami Ahmed, Vice-President of the Islamic Development Bank, during the 50th IsDB Group Annual Meetings in Algiers, Algeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CEF outlines strategic areas of engagement between Uganda and the IsDB, paving the way for targeted investments in critical sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Ggoobi, the first strategic pillar under the CEF is Supporting Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Development, with a strong emphasis on transport and energy infrastructure. These investments aim to accelerate structural transformation and boost agricultural productivity to enhance food security and expand Uganda\u2019s export base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second pillar focuses on Enhancing Human Capital for Inclusive Development, targeting improvements in health outcomes and skills development. Priority sectors include agriculture, hospitality, health, ICT, and petroleum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six cross-cutting themes will support these pillars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Development of tourism infrastructure and human capital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promotion of digitalization, ICT, and innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate change mitigation and adaptation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women and youth empowerment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promotion of Islamic finance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private sector development and competitiveness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IsDB will provide $500 million (UGX 1.825 trillion)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD) and the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) will each contribute $150 million (UGX 547.6 billion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC) has earmarked $400 million (UGX 1.46 trillion) for insurance and reinsurance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key projects to be funded include:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regional Oncology Centers in Arua and Mbale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bukedea Water Works Project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second Drylands Integrated Development Project in Karamoja (DIDPK-II)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Standard Gauge Railway Project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rehabilitation and expansion of Katakwi General Hospital and establishment of Lwengo General Hospital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rural Electrification and Connectivity Project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Road upgrades in Nakapiripirit-Amudat and Namalu-Lolachat-Nabilatuk-Lokapel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Isingiro-Kigarama-Kashumba-Kasheshe-Tanzania Border Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water Supply and Sanitation Program III<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the 360th Meeting of the IsDB Board of Executive Directors, held during the ongoing Annual Meetings, the Bank approved over $1.32 billion in development financing across its member countries.
