{"id":4158,"date":"2025-05-15T06:48:34","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T06:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/govinfohub.go.ug\/?p=4158"},"modified":"2025-05-15T06:51:25","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T06:51:25","slug":"tayebwa-its-time-to-fight-malaria-like-we-fought-polio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/govinfohub.go.ug\/index.php\/2025\/05\/15\/tayebwa-its-time-to-fight-malaria-like-we-fought-polio\/","title":{"rendered":"Tayebwa: It\u2019s Time to Fight Malaria Like We Fought Polio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Tayebwa#:~:text=Thomas%20Tayebwa%20(born%2010%20November,of%20the%20Parliament%20since%202022.\">Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa<\/a> has urged national and local leaders to approach the fight against malaria with the same urgency and unity that led to Uganda&#8217;s successful eradication of polio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His call to action follows the launch of a new malaria vaccine in April 2025, which targets 1.1 million children under the age of two across 105 high- and moderate-transmission districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the 3rd Walk Against Malaria, held at Parliament on Sunday, May 4, Tayebwa emphasized the critical role of community mobilization in the vaccine rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUganda is the 19th country to introduce the malaria vaccine, and we\u2019ve had one of the most effective rollouts,\u201d he said. \u201cAlthough the vaccine is intended for children aged one to two years, everyone must be involved. I urge parents and leaders to go into your communities and encourage mothers and fathers to bring their children for vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tayebwa compared the malaria vaccine to previous successful immunization campaigns and called for a nationwide effort to eliminate the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVaccination helped us conquer the six killer diseases. Today, polio is nearly nonexistent in Uganda. If we act decisively, we can achieve the same success with malaria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also highlighted ongoing research to expand the vaccine&#8217;s eligibility to children over two years\u2014a development he described as essential to creating a malaria-free generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tayebwa expressed concern over Ministry of Health data indicating a high malaria burden among school-going children, especially those in boarding schools. He advocated for a government policy to implement Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in school dormitories and classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven the structure of most boarding school beds\u2014often double- or triple-deckers\u2014it\u2019s challenging to use mosquito nets effectively,\u201d he noted. \u201cIndoor spraying, at just Shs5,000 per student, is a cost-effective investment that could save countless lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development (Minerals), shared her personal experience with malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy early childhood was traumatic\u2014my parents were constantly in and out of hospitals because of malaria,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been years since I suffered from it, and I believe we can achieve the same for every child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s Deputy Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Fan Xuecheng, reaffirmed his country\u2019s commitment to malaria control efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast year, China provided 500,000 packs of anti-malaria drugs. We are proud to be part of Uganda\u2019s journey to eliminate malaria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Kasonde Mwinga, WHO Representative in Uganda, stressed that the tools to end malaria are already available\u2014it now depends on implementation and political will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have the tools, the knowledge, and the opportunity to achieve a malaria-free world,\u201d he said. \u201cThe time has come to invest in proven interventions and rethink our strategies to accelerate progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in its third year, the Walk Against Malaria is a flagship advocacy initiative led by the Parliamentary Forum on Malaria under Hon. Timothy Batuwa (FDC, Jinja South Division West). The campaign seeks to mobilize domestic resources, raise public awareness, and promote preventive measures such as vaccination and indoor residual spraying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative brings together a wide range of partners, including UNICEF, WHO, Malaria Consortium, Malaria Free Uganda, Next Media, diplomatic missions, and civil society organizations\u2014demonstrating a united front against one of Uganda\u2019s most enduring public health threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tayebwa\u2019s message is unequivocal: with collective leadership, strong political will, and community engagement, Uganda can defeat malaria. The vaccine presents a historic opportunity, and leaders are being urged to rise to the challenge\u2014as they did in the fight against polio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet us not miss this chance.
