The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC)<\/a> Managing Director, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha<\/a> has officially launched a long-awaited water supply project in Kalungu, providing much-needed relief to residents who have faced persistent water shortages.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UGX 20-billion project, fully financed by NWSC through market-based funding, features a 4,000,000-liters-per-day water treatment plant designed to meet both current and future water demands in Kalungu, Kyamulibwa, Bugomola, Lusango, Luvule, Kamuli, Lugasa, and surrounding towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr Mugisha emphasized NWSC\u2019s \u201cdo-it-yourself\u201d strategy, which allowed the corporation to design and implement the project in-house. This approach significantly reduced costs and shortened the completion time, demonstrating NWSC\u2019s growing expertise in infrastructure development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project includes a raw water intake from the Katonga River with a capacity of 4,500 cubic meters per day, a four-kilometre raw water pipeline, and a modern water treatment plant equipped with aerators, coagulators, clarifiers, and rapid sand filters. These features ensure the production of clean and safe water for thousands of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the water treatment plant now complete and under the Defects Liability Period, the focus has shifted to extending water connections to customers. Dr Mugisha reaffirmed NWSC\u2019s commitment to ensuring quick access to clean water for residents, stating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the works at the Water Treatment Plant complete and currently under the Defects Liability Period, the focus has now been shifted to ensuring that water is extended, and connections to customers are expedited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project also includes a 1,500-cubic metre main distribution reservoir on Sala Hill, 6.6 kilometres of treated water pipeline, 20 kilometers of distribution mains, a 100 cubic meter secondary reservoir, and an area administration block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a guided tour of the facilities, Senior Director of P&CD, Eng. Paddy Twesigye, Director of Infrastructure Planning & Development, Eng. Denis Taremwa showcased how NWSC has strengthened its ability to design and supervise projects in-house. They emphasized the significant cost and time savings achieved through this approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project was executed by MS Zhonghao Overseas Construction & Engineering Co. Ltd, in collaboration with GETS Technical Services Ltd. It is expected to eliminate water supply challenges that have hindered the region\u2019s development for years, paving the way for socio-economic transformation in Kalungu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful completion of the Kalungu Water Supply Project represents a major milestone in NWSC\u2019s mission to provide reliable and sustainable access to clean water, supporting Uganda\u2019s broader development and public health goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
