The Ministry of Works and Transport<\/a> has announced the full closure of Karuma Bridge from March 10 to March 31, 2025, to complete essential repair works aimed at ensuring the long-term stability and safety of the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This final phase of repairs involves the installation of expansion joints, a critical step for the bridge\u2019s sustainability. In a statement, Works Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala emphasized the importance of this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This final phase of repairs will ensure the bridge is safe and fully operational for all types of traffic. “The installation of expansion joints is critical to the long-term sustainability of the bridge,\u201d Gen. Katumba stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karuma Bridge, a key link on the Kampala\u2013Gulu Highway, sustained significant structural damage in 2024 due to wear and tear. This led to urgent repair work and a partial closure in September 2024. After three months of repairs, the bridge was partially reopened on December 20, 2024, but only light vehicles were allowed to use it to ease festive season travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closure for heavy trucks remained in place due to the incomplete installation of expansion joints, which are essential for supporting heavier traffic loads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe reopened the bridge for light vehicles, but heavy trucks have not yet been allowed to use it. “The materials required for the repairs, specifically the expansion joints, have now been imported, and these will enable the bridge to accommodate all types of vehicles once installed,\u201d Gen. Katumba explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking before Parliament\u2019s Budget Committee, Gen. Katumba Wamala<\/a> confirmed that a full closure is necessary to complete the work efficiently. He assured the public that the closure would not coincide with the ongoing school term opening period to minimize disruptions for parents and guardians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI instructed my team not to consider closure during this period when learners are being taken back to school. “After that, we will assess whether a closure is necessary and communicate the decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school term opening period is expected to conclude by the end of February, with Senior Five students reporting to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial closure of Karuma Bridge caused significant anxiety in northern Uganda, with businesses reporting a decline in activity. To address long-term connectivity challenges, the government has revealed plans for a new bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gen. Katumba<\/a> acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the closure but urged the public to remain patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know this closure will inconvenience many, but it is essential to ensure the bridge remains safe for years to come.We appreciate the patience and understanding of all road users during this time,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Karuma Bridge, Ayago Bridge on the Karuma\u2013Olwiyo Road will also undergo expansion joint installation due to damage from structural fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis work on Ayago Bridge is just as important. The damage to the joints poses a risk, and we must address it to avoid future complications,\u201d Gen. Katumba <\/a>added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motorists traveling on affected routes are advised to use alternative roads during the closure. For those heading to Gulu or West Nile from Kampala, the recommended route is via Luwero\u2013Kafu\u2013Masindi\u2013Paraa\u2013Pakwach, passing through Murchison Falls National Park. Travelers bound for Lira can take the Iganga\u2013Nakalama\u2013Tirinyi\u2013Pallisa\u2013Kumi\u2013Soroti\u2013Lira route or the Rwenkunye\u2013Apac route via the Masindi Port Ferry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gen. Katumba Wamala concluded by reassuring the public of the government\u2019s commitment to completing the repairs efficiently and minimizing disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
