The National Agriculture Research Organization (NARO)

The National Agriculture Research Organization (NARO) is an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF). Established as a corporate body by the National Agricultural Research Act of 2005. Mandated to undertake research in all aspects of agriculture including crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry, agro- machinery, natural resources and social-economic development.

Its goal is to increase total factor productivity and access to agricultural research products and services for inclusive growth.

Naro is currently headed by Dr. Yona Baguma as its director general, who is assisted by (2) deputy director generals. Dr. Swidiq Mugerwa as Deputy Director General and Dr. Sadik Kassim, Deputy Director General Agricultural Technology Promotion. It’s located on plot 11-13, Lugard Avenue, Entebbe – Uganda.

The organization plays a big role in coordinating, overseeing and guiding agricultural research in Uganda.

The NARO governing council (NGC) is the supreme organ overseeing and ensuring good corporate governance practices are upheld in the National Agricultural Research Organization.

In the execution of its oversight role, the governing council has the following committees in place:

  • Audit and Risk committee 

  • Finance and Human Resource committee 

  • Users committee 

  • Science committee 

It increases total factor productivity and access to agricultural research products for inclusive growth.

NARO also conducts farm clinics, product launches, exhibitions and trade fairs. 

Its Climate Smart Agriculture project conducts climate risk profiling for different agro-ecological zones and participates in climate risk profiling activities.

The Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU) seeks to ease poverty and hunger in northern Uganda, reduce poverty and promote inclusive development.

The project targets eight districts in two sub-regions of Acholi and Lango. It also aims at promoting the use and commercialization of improved technologies as well as benefiting farmers in lowland areas in Uganda.

NARO’s market-oriented and environmentally sustainable beef meat industry project seeks to improve the competitiveness and productivity of the beef sector through fostering gender-responsive rangeland sustainability, agro-forestry and water resource management in Uganda.
