Bunyoro’s draft development plan proposes strengthening 12 enterprises, including coffee growing, livestock farming and tractor hire services, to help households move beyond subsistence production and earn more regular incomes.
The proposed priorities are coffee, bananas, pineapples, dairy farming, goat rearing, fish farming, beef cattle fattening, piggery, poultry, beekeeping, black soldier fly farming and tractor hire services.
According to an Office of the Prime Minister update shared on October 23, the draft places the transition from subsistence to a money economy at the centre of the region’s development agenda. It identifies population growth, environmental changes, and rising living costs as pressures increasing households’ need for cash.
Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs Mary Grace Mugasa, Members of Parliament from the sub-region, and technical officers reviewed the draft after stakeholder consultations.
The proposed enterprises combine familiar agricultural activities with services and emerging production methods. Alongside crops and livestock, adding tractor hire brings mechanisation into the household-income discussion, while black soldier fly farming adds another potential agricultural enterprise.
The plan remains in draft form. Its proposed priorities should therefore be distinguished from funded projects or services already available to farmers.
The Office of the Prime Minister’s Bunyoro Affairs function coordinates special programmes and projects for the sub-region. Turning the proposed enterprises into practical opportunities will require clarity on implementation, financing, and household participation.
For residents, those details will determine how the blueprint translates into support for production and access to markets.
