Mulago National Referral Hospital joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day 2026 with a call to strengthen mental health support for female healthcare workers.

The celebrations were held under the theme “Mental Health Challenges: Building Resilience among Female Health Care Workers at Mulago Hospital.” The event was streamed live on the hospital’s official social media platforms and attended by health sector leaders and invited guests.

The function was officiated by Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister of Uganda, who served as the Guest of Honour. She was received by the hospital’s leadership and other dignitaries from the health sector.

In her keynote address, Nabbanja emphasised the importance of resilience, empowerment and stronger mental health support systems for female healthcare workers. She also highlighted the government’s continued support for Mulago Hospital, particularly in expanding organ transplant services and plastic surgery.

According to the Prime Minister, such advancements are restoring confidence and dignity in Uganda’s health sector.

“Love your work. You are mentors, mothers, leaders and role models. Your contribution to the mental health and wellbeing of our people cannot go unmatched,” she said.

The Executive Director of Mulago Hospital, Rosemary Byanyima, underscored the critical role played by female health workers in delivering compassionate and quality healthcare services. She noted that women form a significant part of the hospital workforce and continue to contribute immensely to patient care.

Speaking at the same event, Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health (Uganda), urged senior female health professionals to mentor younger colleagues to strengthen professional growth and resilience within the sector. She also proposed the establishment of a daycare centre at Mulago Hospital to support staff with young children.

Meanwhile, Lucy Nakyobe, Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Treasury, commended the spirit of teamwork at the hospital, while Hanifa Kawooya praised the resilience and determination demonstrated by female healthcare workers in the face of demanding work environments. The celebrations also featured testimonies from women in the health sector who shared experiences about the challenges they face, particularly concerning mental health. Speakers called for stronger institutional support systems to promote the wellbeing, resilience and professional growth of female healthcare workers.
