The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the sudden death of Major General Deus Sande, the Commander of the Armoured Division based in Masaka.

According to an official statement issued by the UPDF, Maj Gen Sande passed away in the early hours of this morning at approximately 3:45 a.m. in Mpigi District. He was reportedly travelling to Kampala to attend the funeral service of his colleague, Major General Francis Takirwa, which was scheduled to take place at All Saints’ Cathedral in Nakasero.

The statement indicated that Maj Gen Sande developed breathing complications while en route to the capital. He was rushed to a hospital facility in Mpigi, where medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him. However, the efforts were unsuccessful.

UPDF officials said the exact cause of death would be determined following a medical examination.

“We extend our condolences to his family, relatives and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the UPDF statement read, reflecting the sombre mood within the military establishment.

Maj Gen Sande’s passing comes just days after the death of Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, marking a particularly difficult period for the UPDF leadership and the wider defence fraternity. The loss of two senior officers within such a short time has cast a shadow over the institution.

Maj Gen Sande was widely regarded as a dedicated and disciplined officer who served the country with distinction. As Commander of the Armoured Division, he played a key role in overseeing mechanised units and strengthening the operational readiness of the force. The Armoured Division is a critical component of the UPDF’s land forces, responsible for deploying armoured vehicles and heavy equipment in support of national defence and security operations.

Colleagues describe him as a calm and professional leader who was committed to the welfare of the troops under his command. Over the years, he held various command and staff positions within the UPDF, earning recognition for his contribution to the growth and modernisation of the force.

The UPDF has called upon its officers, men and women, as well as members of the public, to join in mourning and to honour the life and service of Maj Gen Sande. Funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated in due course.

As the nation reflects on his service, tributes are anticipated from military leaders, government officials and fellow officers who worked alongside him. His death not only represents a personal loss to his family and friends but also a significant loss to the UPDF at a time when continuity and stability in leadership remain vital.

Further details regarding the medical findings and burial programme are expected to be released by the defence authorities.
