Through an official statement released on Sunday, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) condemned the recent spate of violent attacks that have swept across parts of Western Uganda. The military assured citizens that it is fully committed to restoring peace and stability in the affected regions, emphasising that such acts of violence will not be tolerated.
The attacks, which have left several people injured and caused significant property damage, occurred in districts including Kasese, Bundibugyo, and Kabarole. Local authorities reported that the assailants targeted both public institutions and private properties, causing panic among residents. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as people fled their homes, while security personnel rushed to contain the situation.
In response, the UPDF released a public statement condemning the attacks and calling for calm. The statement highlighted that the military has deployed additional troops to the affected areas to reinforce security measures and prevent further escalation. Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, the UPDF spokesperson, stressed that the military is working in close collaboration with local law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
“Our forces are determined to protect the lives and property of all Ugandans. These attacks are not only criminal acts but also a threat to the peace and stability of our nation. We want to assure the people of Western Uganda that the UPDF will continue to uphold law and order and that those responsible will face the full force of the law,” Lt. Gen. Elwelu stated.
The UPDF’s proactive response comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in parts of Western Uganda, where cross-border crime and communal tensions have occasionally led to violent incidents. Security analysts note that while the attacks may appear isolated, they reflect underlying grievances and the need for a coordinated approach to maintain stability.
Local leaders have welcomed the UPDF’s swift action, urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces. The Resident District Commissioner of Kasese, who visited affected communities over the weekend, called on residents to report any suspicious activities and emphasised the importance of unity in the face of such challenges.
“The UPDF’s presence reassures us that security agencies are taking these incidents seriously. However, the community must play its part by staying alert and supporting law enforcement efforts. Together, we can prevent further disruption and safeguard our homes and livelihoods,” the RDC remarked.
In addition to security measures, the UPDF has announced plans to engage with community leaders, civil society organisations, and local authorities to address the root causes of the attacks. This includes dialogue initiatives aimed at fostering understanding among different groups, as well as programs to support victims of recent violence.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has also expressed concern over the attacks, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could incite panic. Authorities have called for patience as investigations continue, assuring the public that a thorough and transparent process will be undertaken to identify the culprits.
While the recent incidents have undoubtedly caused fear among residents, experts suggest that the UPDF’s decisive response is likely to deter further attacks. Historical trends indicate that swift military and police action, coupled with community engagement, is effective in restoring order and preventing a resurgence of violence.
