The Electoral Commission of Uganda has announced the final preparations for the nomination of presidential candidates for the 2026 general elections. In a statement released on September 20, 2025, the Commission called on all aspiring candidates to note the important dates and requirements.
The nomination exercise will take place over two days, Tuesday, September 23, and Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the Electoral Commission’s Head Office Grounds, Plot 2508, Lubowa, Kigo-Lweza Road, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
To be nominated, candidates must be Ugandan by birth, a registered voter, and at least 18 years old. They must also provide certified copies of educational documents showing a minimum of Advanced Level (A-Level) education or its equivalent.
Candidates must demonstrate national support, with nominations backed by at least 100 registered voters from at least 98 districts, representing two-thirds of all districts and cities.
Required documents include a completed nomination paper in triplicate, a signed declaration of consent, proof of A-Level education, proof of voter registration for the candidate, proposer, and seconder, three recent passport-sized photographs, a certificate of compliance from the Commission, and proof of payment of the non-refundable nomination fee of UGX 20 million. Candidates are also advised to bring a proposed campaign schedule, starting September 29, 2025.
Only formally invited and accredited persons will be allowed on the nomination grounds to ensure an orderly and secure process. The Commission urges all aspirants to carefully review the guidelines to meet every requirement for a successful nomination.
