The top leadership of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) convened on Wednesday at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe for a high-level strategic meeting chaired by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The session, attended by the Deputy CDF, service chiefs, division commanders, and departmental heads, reviewed Uganda’s current security landscape, regional operations, and preparations for the 2026 general elections.

According to officials, the meeting formed part of the UPDF’s routine monthly review engagements, during which commanders assessed intelligence reports and operational updates from across the country and beyond.

A major highlight of the discussions was Uganda’s ongoing participation in international peacekeeping and counter-insurgency operations. The commanders evaluated progress and challenges facing troops deployed under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), joint operations with the Congolese army against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and peace support missions in South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

On the domestic front, army leaders examined emerging threats linked to extremist groups and recent security incidents. The UPDF pledged to intensify counter-terrorism and surveillance efforts to protect Ugandan citizens and deter potential attacks.

With the 2026 general elections drawing closer, the meeting also addressed the military’s role in safeguarding the electoral process. The UPDF is expected to coordinate with the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies to ensure a peaceful voting environment. However, the deployment of the army in elections has previously drawn debate amongst political actors and civil society.

Since assuming office as CDF in March 2024, Gen. Muhoozi has prioritised modernisation, improved readiness, and better welfare for troops. Wednesday’s deliberations underscored his push for a professional, disciplined, and responsive army capable of addressing both national and regional security challenges.

The UPDF reaffirmed its commitment to defending Uganda’s sovereignty, strengthening regional peace initiatives, and ensuring that the upcoming elections proceed without violence or intimidation.
