The Electoral Commission of Uganda (EC) has issued important updates regarding the nomination of candidates for the upcoming 2025/2026 General Elections. This process marks the critical first step toward the elections, ensuring that citizens and aspiring candidates are fully informed.
The nomination period for various Local Government Council positions will run until September 24, 2025. The exercise began with the nomination of District/City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, Councillors, and Special Interest Group representatives.
Following this, nominations will continue for Municipality and City Division Chairpersons and Councillors, then Municipal Division Chairpersons and Councillors, and finally Sub-County and Town Chairpersons and Councillors. All nominations must take place at official, gazetted centres within the respective districts, cities, and counties.
The EC congratulated all successfully nominated candidates and urged them to carefully follow official guidelines as they prepare for the campaign period.
The Commission also addressed concerns about complaints being aired through media channels. It stressed that formal written submissions are the only valid method for raising nomination complaints. This allows the EC to investigate and make decisions in accordance with the law. Individuals and political parties who have already followed this procedure have been assured that their complaints are being addressed.
To ensure fairness, the EC reminded all aspirants to read and understand the requirements for their positions, which are available for free on the Commission’s website (www.ec.or.ug) and at offices in all districts and cities. The Commission noted that some aspirants have failed to secure nomination due to non-compliance with these clear requirements.
Aspiring candidates must also pay non-refundable nomination fees in cash or by bank draft to the relevant Local Government Council. An official General Receipt should be obtained as proof of payment before attending nomination.
Regarding election symbols, these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis after nomination. Independent candidates must ensure they select and officially receive their symbol at the nomination venue by signing the Nomination Control form.
Finally, candidates wishing to withdraw after nomination must submit a written notification, signed by themselves and witnessed by two registered voters from the same electoral area.
The EC thanked all stakeholders, including political parties, organisations, and independent aspirants, for their continued support in fostering a democratic process that delivers free and fair elections.
