Uganda has launched a month-long programme of events to celebrate World Tourism Day, which will culminate in the national celebrations on September 27, 2025, in Arua City. This year’s global theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” highlights the role of tourism in driving inclusive growth, job creation, cultural preservation, and environmental protection.

According to State Minister for Tourism, Martin Mugarra, the month provides an opportunity to showcase Uganda’s diverse attractions to both domestic and international audiences. He emphasised that tourism is a key sector in Uganda’s National Development Plan, with the potential to generate wealth, create employment, and ensure long-term benefits for future generations.

Government efforts to strengthen the sector include improving transport networks, enhancing tourism facilities, diversifying tourism products, and building skills amongst workers. Minister Mugarra noted that this year’s choice of Arua as the host city is intended to highlight the West Nile region as an emerging tourist destination, rich in cultural heritage and ethnic diversity.

As part of the celebrations, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) will hold a rhino naming ceremony at Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary on September 22. Seventeen young rhinos will be named, with individuals, companies, and organisations invited to symbolically adopt them. Funds raised will go towards rhino care, habitat expansion, anti-poaching efforts, and community support around the sanctuary.

In addition, UWA has announced free entry to all national parks from September 25 to 27, giving Ugandans an opportunity to experience the country’s wildlife heritage at no cost.

Tourism Month will feature national and regional activities such as the Miss Tourism grand finale in Kampala on September 5, the Karamoja Cultural Festival from September 8–13, the 30th Coronation Anniversary of King Oyo on September 12, school tourism competitions in Kampala, the CEO’s Forum in Fort Portal, and closing activities in Arua, including school events and games, leading to the main celebration on September 27.

Through these initiatives, the government and tourism stakeholders aim to promote Uganda as a premier travel destination while encouraging citizens to take pride in their natural and cultural resources.
