Kampala, June 22, 2025 – The President of Uganda, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in his role as Chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), has released an official communication concerning the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran. This statement was made available on the President’s verified social media account on June 22, 2025.
In his message, President Museveni highlighted several important ideas including: Acceptance of Israel: He mentioned that “Iran must recognize Israel’s right to exist” as a necessary step towards peace.
Palestinian Rights: Museveni stressed that “the Palestinian people deserve to live in their homeland,” supporting their rightful claims to land.
Historical Factors: He pointed out four main historical reasons behind the ongoing conflict: the refusal of some to acknowledge Israel as a state, ineffective efforts by international players, the impact of outside parties and proxy wars, and the failure to properly consider Palestinian statehood goals.
Need for Talks: The President underlined that “endless wars only cause suffering” and urged for diplomatic solutions.
As the Chairperson of NAM, President Museveni’s remarks are the first from an African leader about the recent tensions between Israel and Iran. The Non-Aligned Movement, which includes 120-member countries, aims to stay neutral in global conflicts.
