In a decisive move to safeguard service delivery nationwide, the Minister for Local Government Hon. Raphael Magyezi, has granted a 180-day extension for all Local Government Administrative Unit Councils. According to a notice in The Uganda Gazette of June 26, 2025, the minister extended the term of office of administrative unit councils due to expire on June 28, 2025 for a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty days from June 29, 2025 pursuant to regulation 12(d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations.
Extensions are effective for keeping institutions running smoothly,” said the Local Government Permanent Secretary. “These extra 180 days give councils the chance to finish important tasks and prepare well for the new administrations.”
This prompt and decisive action is crucial as Uganda prepares for its general elections. The extension guarantees the ongoing implementation of vital initiatives, the finalization of development projects for the 2024/25 period, the meticulous preparation of handover materials, and the maintenance of stable local governance amidst the transitions that accompany election periods.
Looking back, this is Uganda’s third extension of this kind since 2016, with past decisions successfully stopping service disruptions during transitions. The Ministry has set up a team to watch over the implementation and share weekly updates on the decision across all 146 districts and 10 city administrations throughout Uganda keeping essential services running.
The Ministry will send out detailed instructions to all local councils by July 1, 2025. All relevant officers are reminded to keep accurate records during this extended timeframe.
