The 97th meeting of the East African Revenue Authorities Technical Committee (EARATC) engagement is underway in Bujumbura, Burundi. The event is being attended by delegates from East African Community Partner States such as Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar.

The weeklong engagement is the culmination of six months of work by the sub-committees of Domestic Taxes, Customs, ICT, Human Resources, and Research in preparation for the East African Revenue Authorities Commissioners General’s (EARACG’s) engagement, which is scheduled for August 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In his opening remarks, the Commissioner General Office Burundais Des Recettes (OBR), Mr. Jean Claude Manirakiza, stated that the engagement is an opportunity to exchange and share experiences and an occasion that can be utilized for purposes of improving revenue collection for the sustainable development of all the East African Community Partner States.

He further appreciated all Commissioners General of different countries for the advice and studies already conducted by their technical committees in a bid to improve the administration of revenue to achieve the goals set by the respective governments. He explained that:

“This quarterly meeting of the technical committee is not only to share experiences; it is also an opportunity to address common challenges facing the tax administrations of the region,” Manirakiza stated.

At the same meeting, Kenya handed over the chairmanship of the technical committee to Tanzania. The outgoing Chairperson, Karen Nginda, and head of the Kenyan delegation has been applauded for her dedicated leadership over the past period. The heads of the delegation have equally welcomed Beatus Nchota, Head of Delegation TRA, and pledged their commitment and support towards delivering the mandate of the Technical Committee.

The Ugandan team in attendance is led by Mrs. Diana Kisaka, Assistant Commissioner of Finance and Head of Delegation.
