The Ministry of Education and Sports has announced a revised reopening date for all schools and educational institutions across Uganda, citing the need to safeguard learners in the aftermath of the recently concluded general elections.
In an official statement issued on 16 January 2026, the Ministry confirmed that Term I of the 2026 academic year will now commence on Tuesday, 10 February, rather than the previously scheduled date of 2 February. The adjustment applies to all categories of institutions, including international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.
The Ministry emphasised that the decision was informed by logistical considerations arising from the national electoral process. Permanent Secretary Dr Kedrace R. Turyagyenda noted that the revision was necessary to ensure a safe and orderly resumption of learning. “For avoidance of doubt, this includes all international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities,” the statement read, highlighting that the safety of learners remains the Ministry’s top priority.
Under the revised academic calendar, Term I is scheduled to conclude on Friday, 1 May 2026. School administrators have been directed to strictly adhere to the updated timetable, while parents, guardians, and other education stakeholders are encouraged to consult the official calendar, which is available on the Ministry’s website, to ensure proper planning and compliance.
The announcement comes amid heightened national activity following the presidential and parliamentary elections, which were largely peaceful. Education officials say the adjustment reflects a precautionary approach to protect students and maintain stability during the post-election transition period.
“The Ministry remains committed to minimising disruption to the academic calendar,” Dr Turyagyenda added. “Schools are urged to prepare adequately for reopening, paying particular attention to safety protocols, academic readiness, and the overall well-being of learners.”
Education authorities have also called on school administrators to ensure that classrooms and facilities are ready for a smooth resumption of lessons. This includes implementing health and safety measures, reviewing teaching schedules, and coordinating with staff to address any learning gaps that may have arisen during the temporary closure.
The revised reopening plan has been welcomed by parents and education stakeholders, many of whom expressed relief that the Ministry prioritised safety without unduly delaying academic progress. Analysts note that the adjustment allows schools to resume under more stable conditions, ensuring that students can continue their studies without disruption.
As Uganda transitions from the election period, the updated academic calendar marks a significant step towards restoring normalcy for millions of learners across the country. Schools, universities, and other educational institutions are now expected to resume operations smoothly, providing students with the opportunity to continue their studies in a secure and well-organised environment.
With Term I now set to run from 10 February to 1 May 2026, the Ministry of Education and Sports has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting learners, teachers, and educational institutions in maintaining high standards of teaching and learning throughout the academic year.
