As the rainy season fully sets in across Kampala, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has issued an urgent advisory aimed at safeguarding road users and the public. The authority is calling on motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution during this period of heavy rainfall to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
In a statement released by KCCA, drivers are reminded of several key precautions to take while navigating the city’s roads under wet conditions. Vehicle preparedness is paramount, officials say, with a special emphasis on ensuring that windscreen wipers are fully functional, tyres have sufficient tread, and brakes are in good working order. Motorists are also urged to observe posted speed limits, maintain a safe following distance, and use headlights to improve visibility.
KCCA strongly cautions against driving through running water or attempting to cross flooded roads, warning that this can lead to vehicles being swept away or becoming stranded. Drivers are encouraged to plan their routes ahead of time, avoid unnecessary trips during periods of heavy rain, and seek shelter if conditions become unsafe. Officials also highlight the importance of courteous driving, discouraging reckless overtaking and other risky manoeuvres that could endanger lives.
Pedestrians, too, have been urged to take specific safety measures during the rainy season. The advisory recommends using umbrellas or raincoats and sticking to designated pavements wherever possible. Walking through floodwater or large puddles is strongly discouraged, as submerged road surfaces may conceal hidden hazards such as open drains or sharp objects. Pedestrians are reminded to remain vigilant and alert while moving through the city, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
“Kampala’s roads can become extremely hazardous during heavy rains. We appeal to both drivers and pedestrians to exercise patience, follow traffic regulations, and take proactive measures to protect themselves and others,” the statement reads.
The rainy season in Kampala has historically been associated with an increase in road accidents, minor injuries, and disruptions to daily commuting. Authorities stress that by following these straightforward precautions, residents can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and contribute to safer road conditions across the city.
KCCA also confirmed that city engineers and emergency teams are actively monitoring areas prone to flooding and are ready to respond to incidents that may arise. Residents are encouraged to report hazards or emergencies promptly through the official KCCA communication channels.
With the rainy season expected to continue over the coming weeks, officials urge everyone to exercise caution, prioritise safety, and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. By taking these preventive measures, both motorists and pedestrians can navigate Kampala safely despite the challenges posed by the seasonal downpours.
