The Ministry for Karamoja Affairs is tasked with coordinating all government programs within the districts of the Karamoja Region. The ministry plays a crucial role in addressing the unique developmental needs of this sub-region, aiming to foster social and economic growth. Currently, the Ministry is led by Simon Peter Lokeris, who serves as the Cabinet Minister for Karamoja Affairs.
The primary mandate of the Ministry is to coordinate government programs across the five districts in the Karamoja sub-region. This involves streamlining efforts to ensure the efficient delivery of services and development projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the people of Karamoja. The Ministry’s efforts focus on a wide range of sectors, including education, agriculture, water management, and livestock support, with a commitment to advancing sustainable development and addressing the challenges faced by the region.
One of the significant achievements of the Ministry has been the coordination and implementation of the Karamoja Integrated Development Program (KIDDP), which addresses critical infrastructure and social needs. The Ministry has successfully completed civil construction projects for educational infrastructure across the sub-region, including the construction of 16 fully furnished dormitories with beds aimed at enhancing the retention of girls in school. Additionally, eight kitchens have been established in key districts such as Amudat, Nakapiripirit, Nabilatuk, Moroto, Kotido, and Abim to support school feeding programs.
Agricultural support has also been a priority, with Namalu Prisons producing 1,254 metric tonnes of grain to support the primary school feeding program in Karamoja. The Ministry has constructed 99 valley tanks, dams, and other water sources, while also providing irrigation systems to eight selected farmers, thereby addressing water scarcity issues and supporting agricultural activities. Livestock health has been improved through the establishment of 25 cattle crushes for vaccination and spraying in the sub-region.
Further achievements include the procurement of 48 walking tractors for use by elders and women’s groups, facilitating agricultural productivity and empowerment within the community. Additionally, three tractors have been provided to Namalu Prisons to enhance food production efforts for the school feeding program. These initiatives underscore the Ministry’s commitment to addressing the diverse developmental needs of the Karamoja Region and improving the livelihoods of its residents.
